Gynaecomastia is a condition that causes an abnormal growth of breast tissue in males. This can occur for a variety of reasons including prolonged use of certain drugs (body-building anabolic steroid preparations/ibuprofen/marijuana) or after significant weight loss or may be part of hormonal imbalances. We may recommend hormonal blood tests via your GP before undergoing any surgery to avoid any recurrence of breast tissue after the procedure.
The fullness in the male breast area may be due to breast tissue, fat or a combination of both and depending on a clinical examination and assessment will depend on the surgical approach suggested to reduce the fullness.
If the fullness of the breast area is due to fat deposit only, this is best treated by weight loss or via surgical liposuction.
If the excess fullness is breast tissue an ‘Open’ surgical procedure may be required. This approach will lead to scars around the nipple/ areolar complex (the brown staining around the prominent nipple area) and the scars are then kept on the margin of the nipple/areola.
In some severe cases commonly seen after major weight loss, a more extensive operation may be needed to remove skin across the chest area as well as any excess breast tissue. This will leave visible scars across the chest area as well as around the areolar area.
The surgical approaches will require you to wear a pressure vest for up to 6 weeks to help control initial swelling and shape the revised chest area.
Consultation fee may apply - for full details call 01524 793170.
The cost of the procedure will be quoted based on the findings and discussion at the consultation.
