Botox is a brand name of Botulinum toxin and is manufactured and produced by Allergan. At Purple Medical Clinic Botox is the toxin of choice.

Botulinum toxin (BoNT) is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It prevents the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from nerve endings at the neuromuscular junction, thus causing reduced muscle action.

If used in minute quantities and injected into the tiny facial muscles identified which allow us to frown and express ourselves Botulinum toxin can soften and even irradicate the frown lines in certain areas on our face.

The most common injection sites for Botulinum toxin in aesthetic treatments are the forehead, frown lines (glabellar), and laughter lines (crow’s feet). It can also be used to lift the eyebrows (chemical brow lift) and used around the lower mouth to lift the corner of the mouth and in the chin area to soften any dimpling. Other areas include bunny lines(across the bridge of the nose) and softening of a gummy smile (the base of the nostrils to reduce the amount of teeth on show when smiling).

A comprehensive understanding of the facial anatomy is imperative if the treatment is to be successful.

Botulinum toxin is a temporary treatment that lasts approximately 3-6 months depending on the individuals’ age, lifestyle, and metabolic rate.

It is a prescription only medicine and therefore you must be seen by a medically qualified individual to determine that the treatment is suitable and who is able to prescribe the treatment – this is the law.

Botulinum toxin is recognised as a medical treatment for migraine.

Botulinum toxin can be used to reduce/stop excessive sweating – hyperhidrosis.

Botulinum toxin can be injected into the neck area to help smooth the tight platysmal bands of muscle which can make this area look uneven and ageing.
