What is Botulinum toxin?
Botulinum toxin is a chemical produced by the Botulinum bacterial toxin, and Botox™ is a brand name of that toxin. Botox licensed to be used for facial cosmetic treatments in the UK, but is a prescription medicine and therefore must be prescribed by a Doctor, Dentist or Nurse Prescriber.
The ageing process causes the slowing down of collagen and elastin production thereby these areas become damaged and permanently lined. By reducing the movement of the muscles, the skin in these areas is allowed to recover causing the lines to soften and even fade away. Botox causes temporary inactivation during which time the patient may subconsciously break the habit of overuse. Depending upon each individual and the dose used, the response to treatment can vary from a relaxation of the muscles to an inability to move the muscles. For the first couple of years, frequent treatments are required to “re-educate” the facial muscles. Thereafter, treatments may become less frequent and eventually.
